The School Curriculum in England for Academy Schools

Academies must teach a broad and balanced curriculum including English, maths and science. They must also teach religious education.

At Crowle CE First School we offer a curriculum which is balanced, broadly based, and uses the National Curriculum in England as the framework. It also

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
  • prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

In addition we hold a daily act of collective worship and  teach religious education to pupils at every key stage. Sex and relationship education is taught to pupils in an age appropriate way.

The National Curriculum in England

The National Curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens.

The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to range beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.

Overview of Phonics Teaching at Crowle CE First School

At Crowle CE First School we use Jolly Phonics to teach phonics?

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are split into seven groups as shown below.

Letter Sound Order

The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

How does Jolly Phonics work?

Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing. The programme continues through school enabling the teaching of essential grammar, spelling and punctuation skills.
